Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma with Transfer Factor I

چکیده
Epstein-Barr virus, the apparent cause of infectious mononucleosis, may also be an etiological agent in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Burkitt 's lymphoma. Lymphocytes from normal individuals with anti-Epstein-Barr virus antibody activity may be sensitized to Epstein-Barr virus and contain transfer factor with the potential to program and/or recruit other lymphocytes to react against the virus and/or viral antigens. A patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma refractory to conventional therapy was treated with transfer factor obtained from normal, young adults with a previous history of infectious mononucleosis. Fol lowing immunotherapy, apparent slowing of tumor growth was observed, which was associated with intense lymphocytic infi l tration of the tumor and reconstitution of delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions to microbial recall antigens. A double-blind randomized clinical trial has been initiated to determine whether transfer factor immunotherapy is a useful adjunct to radiotherapy in the primary treatment of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. If successful, a similar trial might be considered for African patients with Burkitt 's lymphoma.

متن کاملAcute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Following Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Report of an Unusual Case
Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in children. Nasal obstruction, otitis media with effusion, pain in the ear, hearing problems, and unusual neck mass are among the signs and symptoms of this malignancy. Case Report: We report the case of a 13-year-old girl with NPC who later developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) through the course of her disease. To our...
متن کاملRad51 Expression in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and Its Association with Tumor Reduction: A Preliminary Study in Indonesia
Background: Overexpression of Rad51 protein in many tumor cells has been proven to increase radioresistance and can be related to the resistance of chemosensitivity of tumor cells. This preliminary study was conducted to determine the relationship between the Rad51 expression level in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and the response of the treatment based on the measurement o...

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, particulary tumors endemic to the Far East, commonly harbors Epstein-Barr virus. The detection of nuclear antigen associated with EBV and viral DNA in NPC cells have revealed that EBV can infect epithelial cells and is associated with transformation. Human papilloma virus is an epitheliotrophic oncogenic virus that has been detected in a variety of head and neck tu...
